234. Carved Lacquer Inro Black Dragon on Red Waves, Japanese

Ascending dragon on front is carved in tsuikua and the stylized waves in tsuishu. The reverse is the same but the dragon is descending. Five compartments attached on purple chord. Interior compartments done in gold nashiji. Unsigned. An identical inro is shown in "Inro Handbook" by Raymond Bushell, p. 97. Measures apprx 4"H x 2-1/2"W.

An inro was used for storing small things like seals, seal paste, medicine or whatever. It was worn by Japanese men attached to their sash.
