400. Carved Ivory Diptych, European, circa early 19th Century

Small religious object intended for personal devotion. Two ivory panels carved in medium relief depict a blessing and the crucifixion. The left panel features two crowned figures: a bearded male holding an orb and bestowing a benediction, God, and the other bowed with hands fixed in prayer, the patron. The right side bears a standard crucifixion; the dead Christ flanked by the two Mary's slumped in grief. Both rectangular panels feature gothic arches in order to frame the vignette. Panels are hinged together much like the binding of a book. Each side measures apprx 5-3/4"H x 3-3/4"W. Small hinge latch for closure.
