78. Wilson Bigaud (Haitian, Contemporary)

Landscape with birds. Oil on masonite, framed, signed and dated 1976 lower right, 15-1/2" x 23-1/4". Charming naive village scene depicts many birds engaged in such activities as pecking for food or roosting. This island landscape is populated by banana trees, coconut trees and prickly pairs. In wooden frame, entire item measures apprx 17-1/4"H x 25"W. Provenance: ex-coll of a Museum of Modern Art curator.

Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Bigaud began his career as a sculptor but later switched to painting. His famous mural "Wedding of Cana" in the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Port-au-Prince was painted during 1950-51. He won second prize for his 1950 painting titled "Paradise" which was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is in their permanent collection. By the late 1950s he was suffering from severe depression and nearly stopped painting altogether but began again in the early 1960s. He is famous for depicting daily Haitian life.
