| 483. A 13th Century Illuminated Manuscript from the Reign of Philip Augustus, circa 1200-1210
Probably Northeastern France or Paris, this is an original page, or leaf, from a medieval Psalter. The psalter was the principal book for private devotion before the development of books of hours in the thirteenth century. This psalter leaf follows the usual practice of dividing the Psalms according to the cycle in which they were recited at the matins and vespers over the course of the week, every week, in the secular medieval church. Hand illuminated with gold, red and blue inks on vellum. Matted and under protective plastic, image apprx 8-7/8" x 6-1/4", overall apprx 14" x 11". 1,500/2,500 Sold $1,150.00 back to catalog |
