| 533. The Dying Lion of Lucern
Black and white image of the dying Lion of Lucern. The statue is located in Lucerne, Switzerland carved out of the living rock. This monument commemorates the Swiss Guards who died at the Storming of the Tuileries on August 10, 1792. The monument was commissioned in 1821 after a design by Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen. The Latin inscription reads "HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI" : "To the Loyalty and Courage of the Swiss." Image measures apprx 14"H x 20-1/2"W. In dark wood frame, entire item measures apprx 22"H x 26-1/2"W. During a visit to Luzern, American writer Mark Twain described the Lion of Luzern as "the saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world." 100/200 Sold $57.50 back to catalog |
