A teacher at the Minneapolis School of Art, Paul Winchell lived in Minneapolis, having studied at the Art Insititute of Chicago. His teachers included Leon Kroll, Daniel Garber, and Charles Woodbury. 69. Bela Kontuly (Hungarian, 1904-1983)
Still Life with Flowers and Two Pitchers. Oil on canvas, signed lower right corner and dated 1963, framed, 24" x 31-1/2", with frame 28-1/4" x 36". A handsome mid-20th Century style still life with a wide range of warm to cool colors well distributed over the composition. The background has a warm palette, and the patterns flow easily around the picture plane. Kontuly along with his wive, Hajnalka Fusch, studied in Rome. He is considered to be on of Hungary's finest 20th Century artists.

70. Elmer Ladislav Novotny (American, 1909-1997)
Self-portrait. Oil on canvas over board, signed lower right and dated '27 or 28. In a brown wood frame, image size approx. 25-1/4" x 18-1/2", framed overall approx. 29-1/2" x 23". Elmer Novotny, born in 1909, was a long-time resident of Ohio, teacher at Kent State University and painter of portraits, figures, still-lifes and landscapes. He studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and London's Slade School of Art. In the 1930s, like many other socially conscious artists, Novotny painted American workers at their tasks.

79. May Ames (American, d. 1946)
Ohio landscape. Oil on canvas, signed and Dated "May Ames 1930" on the lower right corner, framed in wood gilt frame. Image size approx. 11-1/4" x 17-1/2", framed overall approx. 16-1/4" x 22-1/2". Born in Cleveland, May Ames was an accomplished painter. She studied at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence as well as abroad. She was a member of the Cleveland Woman’s Art Club and the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. She worked as a teacher and a lecturer as well an a painter. Examples of her art are preserved at Mt. Pleasant School in Cleveland, and in murals at the Childrens Tuberculosis Hospital in Cleveland.

83. Alexander A. Dzigurski (American, 1911-1995)
"Oregon". Oil on canvas, signed "A. Dziurski" on the lower right corner, image size approx. 15-1/2" x 19-1/2", framed overall approx. 20-3/4" x 24-1/2". Dzigurski started his career in his native Yugoslavia by decorating the interior of churches, which he continued in the U.S. after he and his family had fled from Tito's communist regime via Italy. By 1952 he travelled extensively and paint, settling in California. He Studied at the School of Art, Belgrade and the Academy of Art, Munich, Germany. He is most identified with sweeping scenes of the ocean surf.

84. Ida Barbour Carmichael (American, b. 1884)
"Kahikilaini". Oil on canvas, signed "Ida B. Carmichael" on the lower right corner, in a grey painted wood frame. Original sticker on verso reads: "Kahikilaini came to the ride the surf. A girl with magical bird powers watched him and fell in love with him. She sent a bird messenger to place a red lehua lei around his neck. Circling above him, the bird let the prince to her cave, where they lived happily until the call of the surf lured him away. But he promised her that he would never kiss another girl. He soon broke his vow, for he met a young girl who hand an ilima (yellow) lei on and kissed him. The bird reported this to the bird girl. Flying to Paumalu, she snatched away the ilima lei and replaced it with lehua and flew away. He tried to follow her, got half way and turned to stone, - a warning to all faithless lovers." Image size approx. 24" x 28", framed overall approx. 27" x 31-1/4". Carmichael studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the University of Cincinnati. She exhibited at the Women’s Art Club (1931-57); Cincinnati Museum (1930s-50s); Closson’s Gallery, and the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. Her works are in permanent collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum, The Columbus Museum of Art, The Dayton Art Institute.
