"Seated Boy." Ink and watercolor on paper, signed "Wm. Sommer" on the lower right corner. Image measures approx. 14-5/8" x 10-5/8", framed overall approx. 24" x 19-1/8". Sommer was born in Detroit, Michigan, and studied with a lithographer for seven years. His work is found in many public collections including the National Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He is a well known Cleveland School artist.

The Bavarian-born Frei studied at the Munich School of Fine Arts before immigrating to the United States in the 1890s. In 1898 he opened the Emil Frei Art Glass Company in St. Louis, Missouri. Quickly recognized for his talent and skill, Frei received commissions from not only churches but also prominent St. Louis families. Frei created his masterpieces from lead crystal glass painted, detailed and fired to create strong, vibrant, highly translucent colors with subtle gradations of hues and textures. Freis windows for the Sacred Heart Cathedral were installed in 1913. Emil Freis descendants (from the 3rd, 4th and 5th generations) currently operate Emil Frei Associates, Inc., in St. Louis, Missouri.

181. Henry George Keller (American, 1869-1949)
Untitled nude woman. Ink on paper, signed "H. Keller" on the bottom left corner. Image size approx. 10-1/2" x 7-1/2", framed overall approx. 16" x 12". A Cleveland School artist, Henry Keller had a forty-year career as a teacher at the Cleveland School of Art and also directed a summer school at Berlin Heights, Ohio. He became the first artist in Ohio to achieve distinction in watercolor. By 1913, he was the region's most outspoken advocate of avant-garde art and wrote the introductory essay for the catalogue of an exhibition of French Cubist paintings at the William Taylor Gallery in Cleveland in the summer of 1913. He lectured widely on the defense of European modernism, and two of his paintings were in the New York Armory Show.
