"Industrial." Black and white lithograph on paper, signed on the lower margin; gift inscribed. Matted and framed in a black wood frame. Image size approx. 17" x 21-1/2", framed overall approx. 23-1/2" x 28". Born in Kings Creek, North Carolina in 1866, Joseph Pennell became best known for his detailed illustrations and etchings, a process he began in the late 1870s. He completed over 1800 etchings and lithographs, executed mostly in Europe before 1917. His style was strongly influenced by James M. Whistler, and his technique was influenced by drawings of Charles Reinhardt. He also wrote and illustrated nearly one hundred books, including a biography of Whistler.

A lot comprised of two artifacts. First, an untitled Still Life. Lithograph on paper, printed also the name "William Sommer" on the lower right corner. Still life drawing of fruit bowl and a small smoke pipe. Paper size approx. 11" x 8-1/2", framed overall approx. 15-1/2" x 14-1/2". The second object in this lot is a brochure from the 1924 Kokoon Club Bal Masque, with the cover designed by Sommer. Inside the 9" x 6" stapled brochure are lithographic advertisements by Kokoon Club member artists including Sommer, August Beihle, Jospeh Jicha, Rolf Stoll, and other contemporaries. William Sommer is seen as a key person in bringing European modernism to Northeast Ohio. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and in his youth apprenticed for seven years to a lithographer. He is now considered one of the foremost Cleveland School artists. He briefly studied at an art academy in Germany and then worked as a lithographer in New York before moving to Cleveland, where he was awarded a major contract with the Otis Lithography Company. After his death at age 82, he was largely forgotten until 1980 when Hilton Kramer, a "New York Times" critic, praised his work. In May to July, 1994, the Ohio Arts Council held a retrospective of his work at the Riffe Gallery in Columbus. His work is found in many public collections including the National Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Untitled. Watercolor on paper, not signed. Stained glass design in Munich style of pictorial stained glass. Image size approx. 9" x 3-1/2", framed overall approx. 18" x 13". The Bavarian-born Frei studied at the Munich School of Fine Arts before immigrating to the United States in the 1890s. In 1898 he opened the Emil Frei Art Glass Company in St. Louis, Missouri. Quickly recognized for his talent and skill, Frei received commissions from not only churches but also prominent St. Louis families. Frei created his masterpieces from lead crystal glass painted, detailed and fired to create strong, vibrant, highly translucent colors with subtle gradations of hues and textures. Frei’s windows for the Sacred Heart Cathedral were installed in 1913. Emil Frei’s descendants (from the 3rd, 4th and 5th generations) currently operate Emil Frei Associates, Inc., in St. Louis, Missouri.
