"Urne, Cippi, E Vasi Centrar di Marmo Nellavilla Corsini Fuori di Porta S. Pancrazio." Two part copperplate engraving: Image on top and text in Italian on bottom, on laid paper. Signature as part of the engraving on the lower right corner. The image depicts a lineup of urns, columns, and burial vases from ancient Rome. Judging from the watermark numbered 35 (ref. Piranesi Early Architectural Fantasies: A Catalogue Raisonne of the Etchings, by Andrew Robinson, page 222) on the back of the engraving, this piece is from the later Roman editions of the Opere Varie circa 1760's. Artist, engraver, and architect, Giovanni Battista Piranesi was never successful commercially; however, earned a reputation of "Rembrandt of architecture." He also was one of the most authoritative archeologists of his time.

"Remains of the Temple of Apollo Near the Adviana Villa close to Tivoli." A first state engraving on thick creme color laid paper with watermark. Signed "Cavalier Piranesi, inc." on the lower left corner as a part of the engraving. Imprint measures approx. 18-5/8" x 24-1/4"W. From the watermark, which is 36 or 39 (ref. Piranesi Early Architectural Fantasies: A Catalogue Raisonne of the Etchings, by Andrew Robinson, page 222-223), the engraving was printed in the late 18th Century in later Roman editions of the Opere Varie, which is a collection of all the engraving Piranesi created. A Hunting Piece No. 3 "The Whipper-In Thrown Out." Hand-painted engraving by Daniel Leperniere of a painting by John Wootton (ca.1683-1764). Image size approx. 16-3/4" x 23". In wood gilt frame, overall approx. 29-3/4" x 34". One of 'A Set of Prints engraved after the most capital Paintings in the Collection of Her Imperial Majesty, the Empress of Russia, lately in the Possession of the Earl of Orford at Houghton in Norfolk', published by John Boydell, London 1779. According to the inscription, the original painting measured 6 feet 10 inches high by 8 feet 5 inches long. The persons depicted include Sit Robert Walpole, Colonel Charles Churchill, and Mr. Turner.

"Industrial." Black and white lithograph on paper, signed on the lower margin; gift inscribed. Matted and framed in a black wood frame. Image size approx. 17" x 21-1/2", framed overall approx. 23-1/2" x 28". Born in Kings Creek, North Carolina in 1866, Joseph Pennell became best known for his detailed illustrations and etchings, a process he began in the late 1870s. He completed over 1800 etchings and lithographs, executed mostly in Europe before 1917. His style was strongly influenced by James M. Whistler, and his technique was influenced by drawings of Charles Reinhardt. He also wrote and illustrated nearly one hundred books, including a biography of Whistler.

A lot comprised of two artifacts. First, an untitled Still Life. Lithograph on paper, printed also the name "William Sommer" on the lower right corner. Still life drawing of fruit bowl and a small smoke pipe. Paper size approx. 11" x 8-1/2", framed overall approx. 15-1/2" x 14-1/2". The second object in this lot is a brochure from the 1924 Kokoon Club Bal Masque, with the cover designed by Sommer. Inside the 9" x 6" stapled brochure are lithographic advertisements by Kokoon Club member artists including Sommer, August Beihle, Jospeh Jicha, Rolf Stoll, and other contemporaries. William Sommer is seen as a key person in bringing European modernism to Northeast Ohio. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and in his youth apprenticed for seven years to a lithographer. He is now considered one of the foremost Cleveland School artists. He briefly studied at an art academy in Germany and then worked as a lithographer in New York before moving to Cleveland, where he was awarded a major contract with the Otis Lithography Company. After his death at age 82, he was largely forgotten until 1980 when Hilton Kramer, a "New York Times" critic, praised his work. In May to July, 1994, the Ohio Arts Council held a retrospective of his work at the Riffe Gallery in Columbus. His work is found in many public collections including the National Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Sommer was born in Detroit, Michigan, and studied with a lithographer for seven years. His work is found in many public collections including the National Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He is one of the most well known Cleveland School artists.
