Gouache and conté crayon on paper, signature not visible. Not framed, paper size apprx 13-3/4" x 17-1/4". After his second time abroad studying, Biehle returned to Cleveland in 1912 and worked for Sherwin Williams and then later, the Otis Lithograph Company. While still working at Otis, Biehle studied with Henry Keller in an informal group labeled the "Summer School", which gathered at Keller's cottage in Berlin Heights, near Sandusky Ohio. He also participated in classes at the Polytechnic Institute with friends and fellow artists Paul Travis and Frank Wilcox. Biehle enjoyed years of weekends spent with William Sommer, fellow artist and co-worker at Otis lithograph at Brandywine. He created a body of work that spanned almost seventy years.

This lot includes a set of three drawings by a renowned Ohio artist August Biehle. First drawing is an abstract in color pencil, signed "A.F. Biehle" on the lower right corner and dated 1966 on the lower left corner. This drawing is framed and matted. Image measures approx. 9" x 5-3/4", framed overall approx. 12-3/4" x 10-3/4". Second item is a graphite drawing on pink paper; signed "August Biehle" on the lower right corner; dated "1932" on the lower left corner. This drawing is not framed, measures approx. 9-5/8" x 5-5/8". Third item is a graphite drawing on cream-colored paper; sighed "A. Biehle on the lower left corner; dated "1932" on the lower right corner. Not framed; measures approx. 9-1/4" x 12-1/2". August Biehle was of German descent. He embraced several styles like Expressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, and American Scene Realism, and he worked in a variety of media including graphite, oil, gouache, pastel, tempera, and lithography. Throughout his seventy year career he exhibited at the Cleveland Museum of Art, He died in 1979, having had a career of nearly seventy years. His paintings have been in numerous exhibitions including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and the Whitney Museum in New York City.

"Angry Tiger", finished 1955. Gouache on paper, signed "Paul Travis" on the lower left corner and inscribed on back of paper. Framed and matted under glass. Image size approx. 19-1/2" x 25-1/2", framed overall approx. 27" x 33". Paul Travis was a leading artist in his native Ohio. He studied art at Cleveland School of Art, served in the Army in World War I, and remained in Europe for several years where he taught art at American universities. In 1920, he returned to Ohio to teach at the Cleveland School, renamed in 1940 the Cleveland Institute of Art, and remained there until 1948. In 1927, he traveled extensively in Africa and used that subject matter for many years in his painting.

Untitled. Black ink on paper, possibly over a lithograhic background, initialed "CEB" on the lower left corner. A very strong image for a wallpaper design, with foliage and coiled snakes in an underwater setting. Image size approx. 19" x 13-1/2", framed overall approx. 28" x 20-1/2". Born in Ashtabula Harbor, Ohio, Charles Burchfield became known as a regionalist painter of middle-western America. His paintings have had much influence on succeeding generations of artists. In 1912, he enrolled in the Cleveland School of Art where his most influential teacher was Henry G. Keller. Another major Ohio influence on his painting was William Sommer, leader of the modernist movement in the Cleveland area. He served in World War I from 1918 to 1919 and in 1921, lived in a small town south of Cleveland, moved to Buffalo, New York where until 1929, he worked as a wallpaper designer for the M.H. Birge and Sons Wallpaper Company.

Image size approx. 5-1/2" X 7-1/2", framed overall approx. 12-3/4" X 14-1/2". Painter and etcher of marine subjects. Born on 1st December 1897 and was a pupil of W.L. Wyllie. He served in the Royal Navy and attained the rank of Lt. Commander. He lived in London and died on 11th February 1956. Exhibited Abbey Gallery, Walker Gallery, and Liverpool Royal Academy.
