320. A West Indian Miniature Painting, ca. 1650

This group of paintings on paper originates from the collection of Alvin O. Bellak. A large group of works were donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, many of which were exhibited at that museum in 2001 and cataloged in the book "Intimate Works Indian Paintings From the Alvin O. Bellak Collection". This focused collection encompassed a broad range of traditions in Indian art; some religious and others from other varied traditions of the Middle East. The paintings are delicate and articulate, with a great sense of decorative detail. Each was given careful consideration when originally acquired by the collector, and maintains an integrity not diminished over time.
"Durga Defeating Chunda & Munda". Watercolor on paper, ca. 1650, not framed, 4-1/4" x 5-5/8" paper size, with mat 10" x 13". A lively battle scene in which the deity Kali triumphs in battle. She carries her ring of skulls in her hand and holds an elephant in another hand. A spurned suitor had sent the two demon generals to do battle with Kali. She receives another new name after her victory. Provenance: The Dr. Alvin O. Bellak Collection
