168. Attributed to the Studios of Emil Frei (German, 1869-1942)

Untitled. Watercolor on paper, not signed. Stained glass design in Munich style of pictorial stained glass. Image size approx. 9" x 3-1/2", framed overall approx. 18" x 13". The Bavarian-born Frei studied at the Munich School of Fine Arts before immigrating to the United States in the 1890s. In 1898 he opened the Emil Frei Art Glass Company in St. Louis, Missouri. Quickly recognized for his talent and skill, Frei received commissions from not only churches but also prominent St. Louis families. Frei created his masterpieces from lead crystal glass painted, detailed and fired to create strong, vibrant, highly translucent colors with subtle gradations of hues and textures. Frei’s windows for the Sacred Heart Cathedral were installed in 1913. Emil Frei’s descendants (from the 3rd, 4th and 5th generations) currently operate Emil Frei Associates, Inc., in St. Louis, Missouri.
