187. Leonetto Cappiello (Italian, 1875-1942)

"Nitrolian." Lithograph, signed "Cappiello" on the lower left corner in the image. Image size approx. 62-1/2" x 46-3/8", framed overall approx. 66-1/4" x 50-3/8". In his advertisement paintings, Cappiello took the approach of making his characters and scenes look anonymous. He would regularly avoid using faces of human characters, preferring instead a dry "less is more" look. The results were always quite successful, and kept Cappiello in high demand. Despite having produced over 1,000 works and developed a highly recognizable style, Cappiello's art is still a bit difficult to classify. Part Belle Epoque and part Art Nouveau, Cappiello's work combines many different styles to form something more unique. Provenance: From the collection of Tom Wilson, Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Wilson's collection spans several decades and includes wonderful Art Deco, sculpture, paintings and drawings from around the the world. Mr. Wilson is a well know cartoonist and creator of the character Ziggy.
