| 42. Leo Michelson (Latvian, 1887 - 1978)
"Three Musicians." Gouache and ink on paper laid on canvas, ca. 1965. Signature not found. In a carved wood gilt frame. Image size approx. 12-1/4" x 15-1/2", framed overall approx. 23" x 26". Page from an exhibition catalogue cut out and pasted on the back. Michelson was born in Riga, Latvia, and began his studies at the Imperial School in St. Petersburg. He later studied and lived in Munich, Berlin, Paris and the United States, becoming an American citizen in 1945. He was awarded the French Legion of Honor in February, 1937, and the Latvian Order of Merit in 1938. Provenance: From the collection of Tom Wilson, Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Wilson's collection spans several decades and includes wonderful Art Deco, sculpture, paintings and drawings from around the the world.
