| 349. Jose de Creeft (American, 1884-1982)
"The Cloud". Composite sculpture with applied patina in green. Measures approx. 13-1/2"H x 12"W. A similar work, possibly this very one, was exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (please see last detailed image. The artist was born November 27, 1884 in Guadalahara, Spain. In 1900 he moved his family to Madrid where he studied drawing and was apprenticed to the Spanish government's official sculptor, Don Augustin Querol. In 1929 he had his first American one-man show at the Seattle Art Institute. He recieved his first major American commission in 1951 from Philadelphia's Fairmont Park Association and completed the famous "Alice in Wonderland" in bronze for New York's Central Park in 1959. Jose de Creeft exhibited regularly at the Kennedy Galleries, New York. Provenance: From the collection of Tom Wilson, Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Wilson's collection spans several decades and includes wonderful Art Deco, sculpture, paintings and drawings from around the the world.
