| 365. Sunol Alvar (Spanish, b. 1935)
"La Paloma." Ceramic verdigris sculpture. Head and an arm of a woman holding a dove on her right hand. The sculpture measures approx. 9"H x 9"W x 4-1/2"Deep. Inscribed "Alvar" on the front and right side. Provenance: From the collection of Tom Wilson, Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Wilson's collection spans several decades and includes wonderful Art Deco, sculpture, paintings and drawings from around the the world. Mr. Wilson is a well know cartoonist and creator of the character Ziggy. Alvar was born in Barcelona in 1935 and attended the Escuela Superior de Belles Artes. While attending school, one of his paintings was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona for its permanent collection. He was given his first one man show in 1957 before he graduated. After graduating, Alvar was awarded a scholarship to study at the Institut François in Paris. Alvar has exhibited regularly in Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan. His lithographs, paintings and sculpture have been presented in major shows at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Salt Lake City in 1982 and the Wichita Art Museum in 1983. The Kumamoto Museum and the Fukuoka Museum, both in Kyushu, Japan have purchased his lithographs for their permanent collections. 300/500 Sold $701.50 back to catalog |
