344. Max Kalish (American, 1891 - 1945)

Nude female torso. Carved Belgian black marble, inscribed on base "M. Kalish 1934". Approx. 18-1/2"H. Not typical of the artists known bronze work of American laborers, this piece defines the artist's knowledge of scale, form and elegance. This was a gifted to Ms. Clara Scranton of Cleveland, Ohio, an employee of the Cleveland Museum of Art and friend of Dr. Charles Muncaster, a patron of the arts in the early history of the Cleveland School.
