642. Mappa Astrivarum/ A Map of the Sommer Islands, From "A Prospect of the Most Famous parts of the World", by John Speed, ca. 1676

Compiled in 1622 by Richard Norwood. This map is important for being the first to show the islands divided into tribes and lots between the first English settlers. On the verso is an English-text description of the islands. These divisions designated the properties given to the adventurers, led by Sir George Sommers, who were shipwrecked there in 1609. Speed's map became the standard map of the 17th century and was copied by Blaeu, Jansson, Ogilby and others. Titles in both English and Latin. The map was beautifully engraved by Abraham Goos in Amsterdam for Speed's Prospect and his signature appears below the scale of miles. Image apprx 15-3/4" x 21".
