643. Nova et accuratra Tabula Hispaniae Praecipuis, Urbibus, Vestitu, Insignibus, et Antiquitatibus exornata per N. Johannis Visscher, ca. early 17th Century

Antique hand colored engraved map, derived from the earlier 1613 map Typus Hispaniae by fellow Dutch cartographer Hessel Gerritsz, which in turn acknowledged Don Andreae d'Almade, Professor of Coimbra University, as its source. The views across the top and bottom of the plate show Pons Segovia, Madrid, Sevilla, Lixbona, Valladolid & Turris Herculis, S. Adriani Mons, Granada, Toledo, Escorial, Barcelona, Burgos & Algibe. Many of these derive from the earlier Braun & Hogenberg Atlas of town plans Civitates Orbis Terrarum [1572-1617]. The coats of arms of Spain is at top center and the principal regions are also included in the borders. The four side panels to the left and right of the map are by an anonymous artist in the Visscher workshop and depict native female and male figures including Spanish, Biscayan, Portuguese & Morisco. Plate impression apprx 18-1/4" x 23-1/8". Matted and framed overall apprx 31-1/2" x 34-1/2". Provenance: estate of Mr. Gordon K. Mott from Cleveland, Ohio.
