139. Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-1778)

"Remains of the Temple of Apollo Near the Adviana Villa close to Tivoli." A first state engraving on thick creme color laid paper with watermark. Signed "Cavalier Piranesi, inc." on the lower left corner as a part of the engraving. Imprint measures approx. 18-5/8" x 24-1/4"W. From the watermark, which is 36 or 39 (ref. Piranesi Early Architectural Fantasies: A Catalogue Raisonne of the Etchings, by Andrew Robinson, page 222-223), the engraving was printed in the late 18th Century in later Roman editions of the Opere Varie, which is a collection of all the engraving Piranesi created. Artist, engraver, and architect, Giovanni Battista Piranesi was never successful commercially; however, he earned a reputation of "Rembrandt of architecture." He also was one of the most authoritative archeologists of his time.
