| 416. A Davenport Writing Desk, C. Late 19th Century
Wood carved doweled gallery at top, green leather inserted writing surface, flip lid and side compartment; one with small compartments for letters and such, the other with larger space. Made of a golden color oak with a rubbed finish. Burled wood panels. Apprx 35" H x 25" W x 31" D. In 1790, Captain Josiah Davenport needed a compact writing desk, with plenty of storage space, for an upcoming trans-Atlantic ocean voyage. The efficient and stylish piece he commissioned became so popular that his furniture maker was soon overwhelmed with orders for "Davenports". 700/900 back to catalog |
