An early study of a landscape. Oil wash on paper board in the topographical tradition. Numbered "#2", dated "24th May, 1796" and inscribed on the verso in graphite and ink. Originally purchased from a private collection in England by the owner, apprx 30 years ago. Apprx 7-3/8" x 10-7/16", not framed.

Untitled scene with two cows near a lake. Oil on wood panel, signed and dated 1830 and "Pinx" (painted this), on the lower left corner. Panel size approx. 6-3/4" x 5-1/4". Framed in a newer gilded frame with leaf corner ornaments. The cows rest on the riverbank; in front of them are a small rowboat and ducks on the water. In the distance sailboats are seen and a windmill is on the opposite bank. The tower in rear would seem to be that of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Antwerp. Alfred Stannard along with his brother Joseph Stannard belonged to the Norwich School of Painters, which was a school of English artists in the early 19th Century.

"Mint Canyon - Windy Day". Oil on canvas over board, signed "H. R. Butler" on the lower right corner. An attractive panoramic scene in the desert with a sandy road winding through the scene. Framed in a bronze gilded frame with ornate corner ornaments in the Arts and Crafts style. Howard Russell Butler studied at Princeton and Columbia Law School, before he became a full-time artist. For some time his interests were painting solstices and California landscapes. This painting is a good example of the latter. Image measures approx. 13-1/2" x 19-1/2", framed overall approx. 22" x 28".

"Bather Resting". Oil on canvas, signed "Blendon Campbell" on the lower left corner. Decorative gilt frame. Image measures approx. 25-1/2" x 19-1/2", overall framed approx. 33" x 27". Campbell studied in Paris with Laurens and Constant at the Academie Julien and later with J.M. Whistler. By the age of 27 he won several prizes at the paris Salon. He exhibited extensively until 1949. Nymphs were probably his favorite subject matter. Blendon Campbell's works are represented in such institutions as the Art Institute of Chicago, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., and Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Untitled boat scene. Oil on canvas, signed "H. Melville Fisher" on the lower left corner, in a gilt frame. Image measures approx. 25-1/2" x 21-1/2", framed overall approx. 34" x 30". Hugo Melville Fisher was the son of artist Hugo Fisher, from whom he took his first training in art. Later Fisher studied in Paris, and traveled extensively before resettling in California.

Place Vendôme, early evening. Oil on canvas, signed lower left. Canvas size approx. 18" x 21", overall with frame approx. 27-1/2" x 30-1/2". Edouard Cortes comes from a long line of painters and began his career at an early age. He first exhibited at the Société des Artistes Français in 1899 at the age of sixteen. He is most famous for his paintings of Paris, many of which can be found at esteemed galleries and collections throughout the world.

Untitled landscape at dusk with a tree. Oil on canvas, signed "Olive H. Chaffee" on the lower right corner, where the first name was probably added later. Thick canvas laid on wood frame with some blue paint over it. Image measures approx. 14" x 17"; framed overall approx. 20" x 23". The "Painter of Trees", Olive Holbert Chaffee, was born on January 9, 1886 in Woodville, Kentucky. She began her formal training in art with private lessons while still in high school. Later she studied with Chauncey Ryder and George Conroy in New York. Chaffee attended the Corcoran Art Gallery School and was later influenced by W. Humphrey Woolrych in St. Louis and W.A. Pratt in Denver. Her Landscape paintings were mostly of Missouri though many reflect her trips about the country. One painting, titled "Missouri Vetch Field", hung in the Oval Office during the presidency of Harry S. Truman. The artist's exhibitions include the Women's National Exposition in St. Louis (1926) -first landscape prize; National Arts Club; the Southern States Art League; Wacha Galleries, St. Louis; Gramercy Park Art Club Galleries, New York; Noonan-Kocian Galleries; St. Louis and Barn Gallery, St. Louis. "Fall Landscape in Colorado". Oil on board, signed on the lower left corner, framed in a simple wood frame. Image measures approx. 23-1/2" x 36" framed overall approx. 29" x 41". David Stirling was born in 1887 in Corydon, Iowa to a pioneering family, and his father was a newspaper publisher. He was the youngest of eight children and he was the first of the family to graduate from high school. He went on to the Cummings Art School in Des Moines, Iowa in 1906-07, and also attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago in 1908-09.
