Provenance: The Estate of Hans Hofmann. Verso stamped with provenance information and features an Ameringer Howard tag with information about the piece. Hans Hofmann was very influential in America in the field of abstract art, for the most part because he was directly participating in the abstract movement in Europe. He founded two art schools in the U.S.: one in New York and one in Provincetown, Massachusetts, which were successful; however, later in life he gave up teaching in order to concentrate on his own painting.

In the 17th Century the Spaniards built on the site of Cap-Haïtien a settlement that became a French possession in 1697. Under the French, who made it the capital of their colony of Saint-Domingue, it was a flourishing town, referred to as Little Paris. This is a view of Old Town, with the mountains in the background.

The poem accompanying the lithograph reads: "Three a.m. - there is dog that barks./Four - a note from a muted trumpet./ Secret warnings of an arrival./ The city ignores them, even now,/ at the time when blood runs coldest,/ the street lights burn and neon rainbows/ chase their own tails. In quiet squares,/ insomniac windows are shining./ Only the mind insists on blackness./ Only the imagination/ contains this fall of ash. Go out. Greet the newcomers. They are clothed in rags./ Their faces are haggard. Their footsteps/ crunch in the cinders, otherwise/ they are silent. Horror holds them. They/ dare not speak about oncoming day."
