| 2. Iznik Tile, ca. late 16th early 17th century
This tile features classic Iznik pattern Ulama Tek Karo. Probably part of a larger mural. Measures approx. 8-1/2" square. The artists from Tabriz brought the techniques for making tiles to the Ottoman empire. The tiles feature deep colors, especially red, blue and green and motifs that are often organic. According to Goodwin (A History of Ottoman Architecture), Iznik tiles with floral patterns, a favorite being the tulip, were used to symbolize the paradise garden, a common motif in Islamic art. 800/1,200 Sold $891.25 back to catalog |
