Hans Hofmann was very influential in America in the field of abstract art, for the most part because he was directly participating in the abstract movement in Europe. He founded two art schools in the U.S.: one in New York and one in Provincetown, Massachusetts, which were successful; however, later in life he gave up teaching in order to concentrate on his own painting.
