94. Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720 - 1778)

"Altra Veduta Interna della Villa di Mecenate de Tivoli". Copperplate engraving on laid paper. Text box on the lower right corner reads: "A. Taverne Publiche. B Cavi ne' quali, erano le teste delle travature de' palchi, quali servivano anticamente per uso di abitazione". Signature as part of the engraving on the lower right corner. Imprint measures approx. 16-1/2" x 24"; paper measures 20-1/2" x 29". Matted, not framed. Judging from the watermark numbered 35 (ref. Piranesi Early Architectural Fantasies: A Catalogue Raisonne of the Etchings, by Andrew Robinson, page 222) on the back of the engraving, this piece is from the later Roman editions of the Opere Varie circa 1760's. Artist, engraver, and architect, Giovanni Battista Piranesi was never successful commercially; however, earned a reputation of "Rembrandt of architecture." He also was one of the most authoritative archeologists of his time.
