96. Francis B. Carpenter. "The First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation Before the Cabinet. From the original picture painted at the White House in 1864."

New York: Carpenter, 1866, steel engraving after the original painting by Francis Bicknell Carpenter, engraved by A. H. Ritchie. Lower margin names the individuals as well as "Premium engraving from the Independent". In fancy wood frame and under old rolled glass, image apprx 25-1/2" x 35-1/2", overall with frame apprx 31" x 41". Carpenter painted the original in the State Dining Room of the White House. Carpenter lived in the White House between February 5 and August 1, 1864, and later wrote a book entitled "Six Months in the White House with Abraham Lincoln" (1866). Many derivative prints were issued of this image, however this is the original image, published by Carpenter as a premium for the newspaper, The Independent.
