200. Doris Lindner (Welsh, 1896 – 1979)

Plaster recumbent bulldog with bronze patina. Marked "Lindel" on the side. Measures approx. 7" x 2-1/2" x 1-1/2". Doris Lindner was born in Radnorshire in Wales. She studied art at St.Martin’s School of Art in London, The British Academy in Rome and at Frank Calderon’s School of Animal Painting in London. Both her abstract sculptures and her Art Deco models were exhibited in Heals store in London in the 1920s. She joined Royal Worcester in 1930 and became recognised as one of their leading modellers. Over a 50 year period about 50 models of dogs by Doris Lindner went into production, all modelled from life. Perhaps unique were the porcelain brooches she modelled featuring some 20 breeds, including some unusual ones. They were made to be worn on cloche felt hats and one can imagine that most were thrown out with the hats. She was considered a great draughtswoman and accepted private commissions. She also had work cast in bronze and was a sculptor for American Kennel Club.
