| 4. Rosewell Morse Shurtleff (American 1838-1915)
"A Race For Life" framed 26 1/2" x 38 1/2", oil on canvas, signed lower right "R.M. Shurtleff" and dated "77". The gold leaf frame is comprised of liners, probably missing ornate outer frame. Scene depicts a pack of wolves chasing a person through the woods. The wolves have chased him through the landscape and out of sight. The only references are his footsteps and his hat laying in the snow, which one of the wolves has stopped to inspect. Shurtleff is best known for his landscapes and some animal paintings. His work has been sold through such auction houses as Christies, Sothebys and Butterfields. The highest price realized at auction for his work thus far is $12,650. R.M. Shurtleff's work can be found in such prestigious institutions as The National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. 9,000/12,000 back to catalog |
