Beautiful young lady is hand-painted on ivory, under glass; surrounded by yellow gold trim with stylized detailing. Overall the body of the box is made of tortoise shell, with gold trim. European gold mark is on the trim of the box. Overall measures approx. 3" in diameter, 7/8" tall.

Primitive engraving of a three mast ship, initialed lower right "AT". Apprx 3-3/4"T. During long voyages many whale-men spent their idle time carving on the sperm whale teeth or bones, carving intricate scenes into the teeth and bones, rubbing their carvings with ink or soot. American whalers produced some of the finest scrimshaw.
