631. Russian Match Safe by Gustav Gustavovich Klingert, Moscow circa 1890's.
Smooth enameled rectangular match safe with hinged lid; front decorated with the escutcheon initialed "N B M" in Cyrillic. Underneath the lid there are two hallmarks: Letters of GK (Gustav Klingert) in a square cartouche (Postnikova-Loseva #3905), and 84 zolotniks mark with Moscow symbol of a man on horseback facing west. On the outer edge of the top of the safe there are two marks: the assayer mark A. R. in Cyrillic, possibly A. Romanov, with the 84 zolotniks mark and symbol of Moscow all in a square cartouche. To the right there is an illegible hallmark and a number "3070" hand scratched. The box measures approx. 2"T x 1-1/4"W x 1/2"L.

A black and white tapestry rendered in a jacquard loomed silk fabric and made by the French ribbon company. The signature is "NF" in the lower left and created after J. Giradet. Two lovely Russian enameled spoons with pan-slavic floral design and a beaded edge. Colors include pale green background, turquoise, green, red, white, navy blue. Egg-shaped shallow bowl with gold-wash interior. Tapering handle features three parts: twist design, four columns of navy blue cloisonné style dots over white enamel, and finial-crown in turquoise and navy blue enamels. Cyrillic letters of N. A. (Nikolai Alexeev) in a square cartouche (Postnikova-Loseva #2710). Both measure approx. 4-1/4"L.

643. An Antique Tole Painted Coal Scuttle
A very decorative 19th century footed coal scuttle, apprx 15" wide, 19" deep, 18" tall to the top of the handle. Probably made of tin, formed, painted, and hand decorated; with a cast iron handle at the top with oak-leaf and acorn motif. The front of the hinged lid is decorated with a painting of a blond young girl daydreaming in a landscape, holding a flower. A two-handled jug is set before her, and a landscape with lake and a clouded sky in the distance. The body of the scuttle is painted black, and at one time was embellished with gilt designs which are almost worn off. There is a space at the back of the scuttle where a brush once was held. There is a handled metal insert in the interior which was used to unload the ashes.
