851. Leeds Creamware Pedestal Bowl & Plate
Pierced bowl raised on pedestal and plinth, stamped illegibly on interior, attributed to Leeds, apprx 5-1/4"T x 5-5/8"D. Apprx 6-3/4"D plate with pierced rim, stamped on bottom. Staffordshire, Yorkshire, and Derbyshire were English ceramic centers, which made the English creamware, such as pieces in this lot, widely available to the middle class. For economical reasons creamware quickly became more popular and widespread than Delft porcelain. It was purchased rather for display, than for everyday use; however, during great holidays these dishes were used as centerpieces at grand dinners.
