Spine started 1/2 way at top and bottom. Interior clean and bright with slight toning at corners from handling. Approx. 15-1/4" x 11". Blind stamp on lower right corner of title page from previous owner.

New York 1970: "Facing East" Signed by Jack Levine and James A. Michener, once inside clamshell box & once on limitation page. No. 572 of 2500 copies. Includes five original lithographs signed by the artist in the stone, two of them are of the same image. There are fifty four original watercolors, gouaches and drawings from the sketchbook by Jack Levine, these were printed by phototypie and ponchoir processes on Ingres paper. From two to forty colors were hand-brushed on each, all in a separate black leather portfolio. The original woodcuts & the text were printed on Arches paper. -The original "hors-texte" woodcut was pulled on Kawanaka Japanese vellum paper. Illustrated by Color plates. Unbounded portfolio.

1035. Crucifixion Illuminated Manuscript, Ethiopia, ca. 19th Century
The Crucifixion, illuminated manuscript leaf painted on thick vellum. A powerful and passionate rendering of the crucifixion of Christ by a very good Ethiopic artist working in the highly stylized Ethiopic tradition. Verso are two columns of script in red and black ink. written in Ethiopic Ge"ez script in a clearly justified space. Ge"ez is a semitic language that is no longer spoken, but still used for liturgical purposes by the Ethiopic Orthodox Church. Overall approx. 11" x 8-3/4".
