Probably from the "Eight views of the Soga with models of the actor`s own calligraphy." Original woodblock print on paper. Half portrait of a Kabuki actor. Artist's "Shichi juroku-sai Toyokuni hitsu" seal is on the top right corner. The artist started to use his age as part of the seal in 1861. This particular one states that Kunisada is 76 years old. Not framed. Overall measures approx. 15" x 10".

From the series A Picture Book of Beautiful Women of the Green Houses (Ehon seiro bijin awase), ca. 1770. Seated beautiful woman reading a scroll. Not framed, overall paper measures approx. 8-1/4" x 5-1/2". Until 1765 Harunobu was not very popular until 1765, when friendship with the poets of haikai (seventeen-syllable poetry) in Edo, enabled him to produced the first nishiki-e (full-color woodcut print) in 1765, suddenly raising him to the zenith of the Ukiyo-e world. His unique dream-like bijin dominated the Ukiyo-e world of his time and Harunobu frequently composed mitate-e (parody pictures) of bijin, his subjects borrowed from historical facts and legendary tales. The basic concept of his art is affection, especially love which was a central element of his works. Harunobu also designed many shunga (erotic prints) which are marked by the same artistry and taste as his ordinary designs.

"Spring Dream." Original woodblock on paper from the Twelve Seasons print collection. Not framed, paper measures approx. 8-3/8" x 11-1/8". The print depicts two women having the same dream while sleeping. Until 1765 Harunobu was not very popular until 1765, when friendship with the poets of haikai (seventeen-syllable poetry) in Edo, enabled him to produced the first nishiki-e (full-color woodcut print) in 1765, suddenly raising him to the zenith of the Ukiyo-e world. Surimono depicting a courtly woman with a fan. Top left corner features a short poem in a square cartouche. Original woodblock print with gaufrage. Published as a Shichi-Fukujin Series, or Seven Gods of Luck. Not framed, measures approx. 8-1/2" x 7-1/2". Surimono's were in fashion during late 18th to early 19th century. These were privately commissioned prints, which in turn were used as gifts, etc. Most of the artist's of that period were commissioned at one point or another. Historical events, scenes from nature, kabuki actors were among the most popular themes in surimonos. They were especially popular among poets.
