643. An Antique Tole Painted Coal Scuttle

A very decorative 19th century footed coal scuttle, apprx 15" wide, 19" deep, 18" tall to the top of the handle. Probably made of tin, formed, painted, and hand decorated; with a cast iron handle at the top with oak-leaf and acorn motif. The front of the hinged lid is decorated with a painting of a blond young girl daydreaming in a landscape, holding a flower. A two-handled jug is set before her, and a landscape with lake and a clouded sky in the distance. The body of the scuttle is painted black, and at one time was embellished with gilt designs which are almost worn off. There is a space at the back of the scuttle where a brush once was held. There is a handled metal insert in the interior which was used to unload the ashes.
