803. Sevres Louis Napoleon and Hortense Portrait Cabinet Platter, ca. late 19th/early 20th Century

Deep green background and ornate gilt decorations enclose two hand-painted portraits signed "D. Humbert." The portraits are of Queen Hortence and King Napoleon of Holland. Bottom is marked "Louis Napoleon Roi de Hollande" and "Hortense Reine de Hollande" and "Mre Imple de Sevres." Measures approx. 10-1/2" x 15" x 2-1/4".

Louise Napoleon Bonaparte was a younger brother of Napoleon I of France, who made him king of Holland on June 5th, 1806. Louis adopted the name King Lodewijk I and took his new role very seriously, despite his brother's intentions of him being a mere French governor. In 1810 Napoleon I accused Louis of putting Dutch interests above those of France and forced him to abdicate on July 1, 1810. Plate depicts Louis Napoleon the King of Holland and his wife Hortense Beauharnais daughter of deceased general Alexandre Vicomte de Beauharnais and his wife Josephine Tascher de la Pagerie. Josephine had become first wife of his brother Napoleon. Thus Hortense was also a niece-by-marriage to Louis.
