| 64. Charles W. Simpson (Canadian, 1878 - 1942)
"The Derrick, Montreal Harbour." Oil on canvas, signed on the lower right corner, framed in a gilt wood frame. Image measures approx. 20" x 25", framed overall approx. 26" x 31". Signed and dated ('13); exhibition label on the back of the painting, which gives the date for the painting (Art Association of Montreal, 1913). A similar view of Montreal Harbour can be found in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. C.W. Simpson was born in Montreal in 1878. Studied at the school of the Art Association of Montreal under William Brymner, and with Edmond Dyonnet and Maurice Cullen. He was encouraged in his work by Henri Julien. After studies in Montreal, he studied at the Art Students League, New York. He became an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy (A.R.C.A.) in 1913, and a full member (R.C.A.) in 1920. A painter and illustrator, he travelled widely in Canada and the United States, and he painted for the Canadian War Memorials (1918). 800/1,200 Sold $2,472.50 back to catalog |
