| 809. Aesthetic Movement Charger by Daniel Cottier (English, 1838-1891)
"Cloris", a polychromed Aesthetic Movement charger, in two pieces. Modeled after a poem by Sir Charles Sedley. Charger made by Minton, stamped on verso, painted by the design house of Cottier, signed on the back. Consigned damaged, worthy of restoration. Approx. 15-1/4"D. Daniel Cottier, a British stained glass artist and interior decorator, was influenced by the writing of John Ruskin, the paintings of the Dante Gabiel Rossetti and the work of William Morris. During 1869 he moved to London, opening "Cottier and Co., Art Furniture Makers, Glass and Tile Painters", supplying aesthetic furnishings in the most fashionable styles. He painted allegorical figures in the Pre-Raphaelite style compared to Rossetti and Sir Edward Burne-Jones. He inspired Louis Comfort Tiffany and has been credited with introducing the Aesthetic Movement to America and Australia. 500/800 Sold $1,236.25 back to catalog |
