428. Gakutei (Yashima Harunobu), (Japanese, born circa 1786 - 1868)

Surimono depicting a courtly woman with a fan. Top left corner features a short poem in a square cartouche. Original woodblock print with gaufrage. Published as a Shichi-Fukujin Series, or Seven Gods of Luck. Not framed, measures approx. 8-1/2" x 7-1/2". Surimono's were in fashion during late 18th to early 19th century. These were privately commissioned prints, which in turn were used as gifts, etc. Most of the artist's of that period were commissioned at one point or another. Historical events, scenes from nature, kabuki actors were among the most popular themes in surimonos. They were especially popular among poets.
