This complex composition is a bright and cheerful Dutch interior scene with women and a child sewing and one woman reading a newspaper. The light through the pair of windows is skillfully shown as it passes through and reflects off the various fabrics. The accoutrements of the interior are also beautifully rendered, including the reflection in a mirror on the wall to the right of the composition. A slender actor stands beside a fence surrounded by foliage. The face of the actor is in deep shadow from the large picture hat. The lace gloves and the two chantelaines attached at the waist are nice details. This sort of cross-costuming was often done at the time in the theatre.
