542. Marble Reproduction of an Olmec Shaman Mask
Modern interpretation of an Olmec civilization shaman's mask. The most well-known aspect of shamanism is the ability to assume the powers of animals associated with the shaman. Curved up lips and slit eyes in this particular mask represent the shaman assuming the powers of a jaguar. Eyebrows in the form of eagle represent the ability of the shaman's soul to travel trough the heavens, the earth, and the underworld. Carved out of white marble with grey striations. Overall this mask measures approx. 14" x 10" x 4" and is quite heavy.
