Landscape with bulls fighting in a stream with a herd of cows nearby. Oil on metal panel, possibly zinc, signature not found; not framed, panel measures approx. 7" x 10". Partial stamp impressed on the back, reads "...le montagne société" and the number 14. This 18th Century-style composition is very well constructed, including the billowing cloud formations and trees blowing in the wind. There is also an indication of a raging fire in the distance at the left, adding to the drama of the scene.

500/1,000 Sold: $488.75

19th Century Italian Painting of an Angel

86. 19th Century Italian Painting of an Angel

Very nice quality painting; a copy of a 16th Century angel, with gold leafed background, set into an attractive architectural frame. Unknown Artist (Continental School, 19th Century)

88. Unknown Artist (Continental School, 19th Century)

Portrait of a nobleman. Oil on canvas, no signature found, framed in a fine Italian style frame, approx. 45" x 36" canvas size, with 4" wide frame, approx. 53" x 44" overall. The nobleman appears in front of a distant landscape with a red drapery billowing behind him. Interestingly, he seems to point to the pink flowers at the left of the composition with his gloved hand, while the other is not gloved. This sort of iconograpy had significance for the sitter, though the meaning is now obscure. This is a 19th Century copy of an earlier portrait in the manner of Kneller.

Unknown Artist (British, 19th Century)

101. Unknown Artist (British, 19th Century)

The Princes in the Tower. Oil on canvas, mounted onto wood, initialed "H.B.S." in the lower left corner, framed in an ornately detailed gilt frame, image size approx. 29" x 20", with frame overall 35" x 26". This painting depicts Edward V of England (1470-1483?) and Richard of Shrewsbury, 1st Duke of York (1473-1483?). The two sons of Edward IV of England and Elizabeth Woodville were placed in the Tower of London (which was at that time both a palace and a prison) in 1483. History presumes that they were killed there, though no definate proof has ever come to light. The composition of this painting is similar to, though not a copy of, the famous painting of the same subject by Sir John Everett Millais from 1878.

The lady is painted in a somewhat primitive format, though the face is executed by a much more skilled hand than the balance of the painting.
