210. Felix Rapos (Spanish, ca. 1793)
Hand Illuminated Vellum Page. An illuminated royal escutcheon of the Alonso family, which is comprised of a red lion with golden bars on a field of silver. There is also a watercolor vignette landscape which surrounds the illuminated gold initial "Y". Calligraphy is on the face of the page as well as verso. The text is part of a Certificate of Noble Origin which gives the right to bear this coat of arms as a resident of Pueblo de Los Angelos in California (then called New Spain). Vellum size is 11-5/8" x 7-3/4".

Portrait of a gentleman. Pastel on paper in oval format, no signature found, paper size is 9-3/4" x 7-3/4", overall with period frame 11-3/4" x 9-3/4". This handsome bewigged young gentleman is beautifully rendered in pastel. He is reminiscent of early portraits of George Washington, and regards the viewer with a frank and insightful expression.

229. John Gould (British, 1804-1881)
A lot of two bird prints framed as a pair. Lithograph, with colors, each framed with green reverse-painted glass mats. "Turdus Fuscatus" measures approx. 20" x 14" image size, and "Trochalopteron Cineraceum" measures approx. the same; overall with frame, each measures approx. 27-1/2" x 21-3/4". John Gould has become known as one of the foremost orthinological artists. Gould created almost 3000 images that were made into hand-color lightographic plates of birds and other animals. The lithography and hand coloring was done by other artists, among them his wife, Elizabeth Gould, Edward Lear, William Hart, and H.C. Richter, whose names appear with Gould's on each image. The editions of the folios these were presented in were relatively small, adding to their rarity.
