A slender actor stands beside a fence surrounded by foliage. The face of the actor is in deep shadow from the large picture hat. The lace gloves and the two chantelaines attached at the waist are nice details. This sort of cross-costuming was often done at the time in the theatre. A young man in early 19th Century dress courts a beautiful lady in a garden setting. The lady coyly looks away as the young man, who has removed his hat, regards her directly. She wears a lovely spring dress and jacket, and a flowered hat tied to the side of her cheek, and she carries a parasol.
