147. Emile Albert Gruppe (American, 1896-1978)
"Nymphs". Oil on canvas, signed in the lower right corner, also signed on verso, titled and dated 1932, framed, 30" x 36" canvas size, overall with frame 32-3/4" x 39-1/4".
Gruppe was originally from Rochester, New York. His signature works are marine subjects around New England, but he is also known for landscapes and portraits. He developed a very modern impressionist style, having been influenced greatly by Monet. This painting's subject is one to which he devoted many other paintings; a dreamy sunlit scene in a forest glade where lovely nymphs are seen at the edge of a stream.

Several young soldiers are resting outside of a building and enjoying seeing one of their comrades help a pretty young girl carry a large tub of water. The composition is elaborate with many figures and various activities. Two soldiers in the background are beating a dusty jacket with a wand, while others rest in the sun.
