289. Frieda Salvendy (Austrian, 1887-1968)

"Jews at Vranov, Slovakia" signed, titled, and dated 1932 on the lower right corner. Matted, not framed. Paper measures approx. 15" x 16". This lot was deaccessioned from a midwest institution.

Frieda Salvendy was was born on January 4th, 1887 in Vienna. She studied Vienna, and later got her art training in Frankfurt with Albin Egger-Lienz and Felix A. Harta. Salvendy exhibited her artwork throughout Europe and was an active member of the Bewegung ("movement") from 1918 to 1922. Together with other artists Frieda was advocating spirituality as the purpose of art, as opposed to decorating tendencies of Art Neuvoue. Salvendy’s works were frequently exhibited at the National Organization of Austrian Women in the Visual Arts, as well as the Association of Female Artists and Craftswomen. She was one of the few women to become an extraordinary member of the Hagenbund association of artists. However, Salvendy's successful career as an artist ended abruptly, when in the eve of the World War II she had to evacuate to England, where she discontinued her active artistic career.
