| 88. Unknown Artist (Continental School, 19th Century)
Portrait of a nobleman. Oil on canvas, no signature found, framed in a fine Italian style frame, approx. 45" x 36" canvas size, with 4" wide frame, approx. 53" x 44" overall. The nobleman appears in front of a distant landscape with a red drapery billowing behind him. Interestingly, he seems to point to the pink flowers at the left of the composition with his gloved hand, while the other is not gloved. This sort of iconograpy had significance for the sitter, though the meaning is now obscure. This is a 19th Century copy of an earlier portrait in the manner of Kneller. 200/500 Sold $586.50 back to catalog |
