710. Theatre Actress May Yohe (1869-1938), Enameled Cigaratte Case (English, 1894-95)

Possibly made by George Hunter. English silver case with gold washed interior, hallmarked. Exterior inscribed with block lettering, with description of the actress's career and history, inscribed at a later date, after 1938. Case lid enamled with hand painted portrait of the actress in costume. Approx. 3-1/8" square. Sold by H. Lewis & Co. William Hammerstein hired May Yohe for $1,500 a week to sing at his New York Theatre, and not so incidentally, to show the famous Hope Diamond as her first husband, Lord Henry Francis Hope Pelham-Clinton, was the owner of the Hope Diamond.
