261. Rene Menard (French)

"Automne". Color lithograph on paper, monogrammed in the stone, lower left corner, blind stamp in the margin under the matting, matted and framed in a contemporary frame under glass, 9-1/2" x 12-3/4" sight size, with framing overall 16-3/4" x 20-1/4'. From L'Estampe Moderne ca. 1897-1899.

These brightly colored lithographed posters are from L'Estampe Moderne published under the supervision of C. Masson and H. Piazza in Paris in 1897-1899. This famous collection included works by major art nouveau artists including Alphonse Mucha, Louis Rhead, Marcel Lenoir, Henri Boutet, Henri Fantin-Latour, Edward Burne-Jones, and Théophile Steinlen. The intention of this work was to "reanimate and disseminate the taste for prints". Every print has the blind stamp of a woman's profile in the bottom right corner. So popular was this collection, that even Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, another well-known poster publication, was surpassed by the beauty of L'Estampe Moderne's large format on excellent quality paper that measures 12" x 16".
