461. An early 19th Century Embroidered Picture

A fabulous embroidered picture, ca. 1810, done in silk embroidery on a silk painted background, with hand painting on the embroidery as well. It is framed in a shadowbox frame with spacers to keep the thread from pressure by the glass. It is sewn in a variety of threads including silk, wool, and cotton. The painting as well as the needlework is exceptional in quality and preservation. Note the silk tassels on the lady's shawl. The sight size of the image is approx. 11" x 11". With the gold leafed frame the overall size is approx. 16" x 15-1/2". The frame is older and has a beaded inner rim with a ribbon trim and rope at the outside. It is surmounted by two "ears" at the top with cast rosettes at either side and a foliate top with a stringed instrument and sheet music scroll in gilt gesso. * Pittsburgh gallery
